Exhibition Design in Action

Bringing Hong Kong’s Marine Heritage to Life – Behind the Scenes of McKAB’s “Oyster Reef” Touring Exhibition

At McKAB Group, we believe exhibition design is more than just space planning — it’s about telling meaningful stories, sparking curiosity, and delivering immersive experiences that move people.

One of our latest highlights was the successful execution of the “Oyster Reef: Reviving Hong Kong’s Marine Culture and Conservation” exhibition — a thought-provoking, multi-location installation that debuted at Pacific Place and is now touring across several venues in Hong Kong.

From Vision to Reality:

Designing an Exhibition That Educates and Inspires

The exhibition aimed to spotlight the ecological importance of oyster reefs — showing how they support marine biodiversity, improve water quality, and help protect shorelines. Through immersive displays, interactive zones, and hands-on educational experiences, we helped bring these ecological messages to life, while also honoring the cultural and historical relevance of oysters in Hong Kong.

Our Exhibition Design Challenges:

Modular, Sustainable, and Visually Impressive

This wasn’t a one-off installation — it was a month-long touring exhibition with multiple setups at different venues like Pacific Place and Cityplaza. That meant we had to approach the exhibition design with three key priorities in mind:

1. Modular Setup for Portability

Every display panel and structure was engineered for quick assembly, easy dismantling, and safe transport to meet the demands of a mobile exhibition.

2. Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Materials

To align with the conservation theme, we used recyclable materials and minimized single-use elements — proving that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with striking design.

3. High Visual Standards

Exhibiting in upscale malls required impeccable attention to detail. We used layered lighting, bold textures, and dimensional forms to create an elevated, immersive environment that met luxury venue expectations.

Making It Interactive:

Bringing Science to Life

To move beyond static displays and boost visitor engagement, we introduced a range of interactive features:

Rotating Map Displays

Allowing visitors to turn panels and uncover oyster reef facts.

Touchscreen Information Zones

Offering rich educational content and short videos.

Specimen Display Tables

Featuring real oyster shells and marine life samples for tactile exploration.

LED Screens and Animated Effects

Simulating wave movements and adding motion to the space.

Every detail — from real oyster shell trimmings to warm-tone LED mood lighting and child-safe protective barriers — was carefully thought out to balance authenticity, interactivity, and safety.
